My Gear

Being a digital nomad takes a variety of gadgets and software. I will try and keep this list updated and write various reviews of gear as i use it.

Apple Iphone :  I had the first iphone in Yemen and possibly the Arabia peninsula, which Apple kindly shipped to me and i unlocked in Sana’a. The second iphone in Yemen was also unlocked by me and presented to Kamal Al Jabri, the Yemeni Minister of Communications and Information Technology,  at a very informal Qat chew.

The iphone works well as a personal media device. The wifi capability is great for when you are in coffee shops.

2 x Blackberrys  : The fantastic push email service doesnt work in Yemen or in countries where there is no GPRS data roaming. However it works great as an organiser and has most of my contacts on it. Immediately updates with email as soon as i land in Dubai or London. Configuring email accounts at the web end as opposed to the phone end, makes this better and easier to use than the Iphone.

Toshiba Equium Laptop : 3 years old and now replaced by a MSI Wind netbook. It was a good servant, has travelled over 15,000 miles, at least 40 flights, and visited many countries. Celeron processor is a disaster. Gets hot. Nice screen though.

MSI Wind 6 Cell Netbook : Recent purchase in January 2009.  Awesome battery life allows for at least 2 movies to be watched. Strange screen lid design means that the whole device topples over sometimes. Perfect adequate keyboard. Light as a feather.

Apple Ipod 30gb Classic 4th Gen : My music player. Great for podcasts.

Apple Mac Mini : Experimenting with travelling with this. Great as a media centre. The DVD drive and faster processor is useful and better than the netbook.

LCD flatscreen, keyboard and mouse : Kept at several locations including my house in Yemen, and my place in London. Plug the mac mini or netbook in and have a PC and MAC.

    Hey there Matt,

I was just reading your Gear post and was interested in your iphone story :) when did you take the iphone to yemen? i took one in September of 2007 and THOUGHT i was the one with the first one in Yemen:). Anyway, it worked there and I was being offered $$ for it. Interesting story though. It’s a great piece of technology and i haven’t had anything else but an iphone since.

    Mohamed
